Anyone who teaches statistics - especially AP statistics. This course is also suitable for anyone who wants an introductory course in statistics--it is similar to our Intro 1 and Intro 2 courses (but requires a different textbook from our "Introduction to Statistics for Beginners" course that precedes them, and the Intro 3 course that follows them).

Introduction to Statistics 1:  Sampling and Inference



Aim of Course:

To provide an easy introduction to statistical inference for a single variable. Once you've completed this course you'll be able to apply statistically valid designs to basic studies, and test hypotheses regarding proportions and means.

Note: This is the first of a two course sequence, part two being Introduction to Statistics 2-AP: Working with Bivariate Data. For those with little or no prior exposure to basic probability and descriptive stats, see also Survey of Statistics for Beginners.

This is a summer session of our regular Introduction to Statistics 1 course, and is especially suited to AP stats teachers who need to tune up their statistical skills. The summer sessions feature an emphasis on graphing calculators, a high school version of the textbook (possibly the same textbook you will use in class), and an instructor who is an experienced AP Stats teacher. The topics covered and the requirements for certificates, grades or credit are the same as for our other offerings of the course.

Prerequisite(s):
You should be familiar with basic probability and descriptive statistics. If you feel you need additional preparation prior to taking this course, consider taking Survey of Statistics for Beginners. You should also be familiar with the use of a statistical software package (or calculator) of your choice -- please review the software section below.
Course Program:

 

SESSION 1: Studies to estimate a population parameter

 

  • Observational studies
  • Designed experiments
  • Sampling from a population

SESSION 2: Inference for Proportions

  • Sampling distributions
  • Confidence intervals for proportions
  • Standard error of an estimate
  • Hypothesis tests for proportions

SESSION 3: Inference for Means

  • The t-test
  • Type I and Type II errors
  • The power of a test

Organization of the Course:

This course takes place over the internet, at statistics.com for 4 weeks. During each course week, you participate at times of your own choosing - there are no set times when you must be online. Course participants will be given access to a private discussion board. In class discussions led by the instructor, you can post questions, seek clarification, and interact with your fellow students and the instructor.

The course typically requires 15 hours per week. At the beginning of each week, you receive the relevant material, in addition to answers to exercises from the previous session. During the week, you are expected to go over the course materials, work through exercises, and submit answers. Discussion among participants is encouraged. The instructor will provide answers and comments, and you will receive individual feedback on your homework answers.


Credit:
Students come to The Institute for a variety of reasons:
  1. You may be interested only in learning the material presented, and not be concerned with grades or a record of completion.
  2. You may be enrolled in PASS (Program in Advanced Statistical Studies) that requires demonstration of proficiency in the subject, in which case your work will be assessed for a grade.
  3. You may require a "Record of Course Completion," along with professional development credit in the form of Continuing Education Units (CEU's).

As you begin the class, you will be asked to specify your category.

This course offers continuing education units (CEU's). For those successfully completing the course (generally this means marks of 50% or better on the homework), 5.0 CEU's and a record of course completion will be issued by Statistics.com, upon request.

The course text for the summer sessions is Bock, Velleman and De Veaux, Stats: Modeling the World, 3rd edition, with ActivStats CD (ActivStats is an award-winning multimedia statistics tutorial. It runs on PCs and Macs.) You must purchase it directly from the publisher here (if you buy it elsewhere, it may not come with a valid copy of ActivStats. This text is among the top choices for AP statistics.

Software:

Those contemplating teaching AP statistics (or any high school statistics course) will probably want to use a graphing calculator. The textbook integrates instruction in using the TI-83 family of graphing calculators as well as the statistical software program Data Desk, and provides brief tips on using SPSS, JMP, Minitab and the TI-89 graphing calculator.
