Glossary of statistical terms

Uniform Distribution:

The uniform distribution describes probabilistic properties of a continuous random variable Math image that is equally likely to take any value within an interval Math image , and never takes on values outside this interval.

The uniform distribution is characterised by two parameters - the lower and the upper boundaries of the interval ( Math image and Math image in our example).

Mathematically, the uniform distribution is described by its probability density Math image described by the following expression:

The uniform distribution describes, for example, the distribution of errors arising after rounding floating point numbers up to the nearest integer, e.g. in course of analog-to-digit conversion taking place whenever a physical entity, like an image or sound signal, is converted to a digital form.

The uniform distribution is widely used in generation of pseudo-random numbers .

Statistics.com offers over 100 courses in statistics from introductory to advanced level. Most are 4 weeks long and take place online in series of weekly lessons and assignments, requiring about 15 hours/week. Participate at your convenience; there are no set times when you must to be online. Ask questions and exchange comments with the instructor and other students on a private discussion board throughout the course.

Statistics 1 - Probability and Study Design

This course, the first of a 3-course sequence, provides an introduction to statistics for those with little or no prior exposure to basic probability and statistics.  It runs every eight weeks.

Probability Distributions

This course cover statistical probability distributions. Participants will learn how to identify which distribution(s) reasonably fit given data, and to evaluate the fit.
