Aim of Course:

This online course provides an overview of SEM software and matrix notation.  Overall, only a few model commands are necessary to conduct matrix operations and obtain parameter estimates for models using the SEM software.  However, an understanding of matrix operations and properties can be very helpful when conducting structural equation modelling.  This online course covers many popular Advanced SEM models with practical exercises. After completing Advanced Structural Equation Modeling, students will be able to specify, execute and interpret output for the SEM models listed below.

Homework in this course consists of exercises with guided data analysis problems using course included software.  In addition to assigned readings, this course also has supplemental PDF reading material, and exams to assess knowledge and comprehension.

Advanced Structural Equation Modeling

Who Should Take This Course:
Market researchers, educational researchers, sociologists and psychologists, political scientists, economists, and survy researchers.
Organization of the Course:

This course takes place online at the Institute for 4 weeks. During each course week, you participate at times of your own choosing - there are no set times when you must be online. Course participants will be given access to a private discussion board. In class discussions led by the instructor, you can post questions, seek clarification, and interact with your fellow students and the instructor.

At the beginning of each week, you receive the relevant material, in addition to answers to exercises from the previous session. During the week, you are expected to go over the course materials, work through exercises, and submit answers. Discussion among participants is encouraged. The instructor will provide answers and comments, and at the end of the week, you will receive individual feedback on your homework answers.

Time Requirement:
About 15 hours per week, at times of  your choosing.

Options for Credit and Recognition:
Students come to the Institute for a variety of reasons. As you begin the course, you will be asked to specify your category:
  1. No credit - You may be interested only in learning the material presented, and not be concerned with grades or a record of completion.
  2. Certificate - You may be enrolled in PASS (Programs in Analytics and Statistical Studies) that requires demonstration of proficiency in the subject, in which case your work will be assessed for a grade.
  3. CEUs and/or proof of completion - You may require a "Record of Course Completion," along with professional development credit in the form of Continuing Education Units (CEU's).  For those successfully completing the course,  CEU's and a record of course completion will be issued by The Institute, upon request.
  4. Digital Badge - Courses evaluated by the American Council on Education have a digital badge available for successful completion of the course.  
  5. Other options - Specializations, INFORMS CAP recognition, and academic (college) credit are available for some courses
Course Text:

The advanced SEM models are presented in the text A Beginner's Guide to Structural Equation Modeling, 4th edition, published December 2015, by Randall E. Schumacker and Richard Lomax, and also in New Developments and Techniques in Structural Equation Modeling, ed. by Randall E. Schumacker and George Marcoulides. Both will cover the course topics, but the latter will serve as a more in-depth reference. The CD that comes with the Beginner's Guide book contains LISREL, which the course emphasizes, as well as AMOS and EQS student versions of SEM software, while the New Developments... book does not provide these software programs. Either book can be used for the course, but please keep your software requirements in mind when ordering.

We recommend

1) If you have access to software, are comfortable with your knowledge of basic SEM and need a reference for future exploration, choose the "New Developments..." book.

2) If you need software, are only recently learning SEM and are more concerned with consolidating your knowledge, choose the "Beginner's Guide."


The course will provide illustrations in LISREL and Mplus.  LISREL is Windows-based, and Mplus runs on Windows, Mac and Linux.  You can download a free student version of LISREL from the textbook website.  Mplus offers a demo version that can do problems of limited scope; to do all the problems in the course you will need a student license, which is available to students enrolled in degree-granting programs.  Course staff can offer help with LISREL, and with demo-level Mplus issues, for examples that are covered in the course.
