Embracing and Broadening Statistical Thinking in Staff

Minerals Technologies, Inc. (MTI) specializes in range of specialty mineral, mineral-based and synthetic mineral products and related systems and services and serves the paper, foundry, steel, environmental, energy, polymer and consumer products industries.

The Need

Mike Donovan, Global R&D Director for Construction Technologies at MTI, is a passionate believer in the benefits that statistics can bring to his company’s operations. Mike believed that the application of statistical methods by specialists could be embraced by a broader embrace of statistical thinking among the technical staff. Mike looked to bring greater statistical rigor to the company’s research and development process improvement efforts, and specifically, a more comprehensive application of methods for the statistical design of experiments.

Our Solution

After reviewing our design of experiments course, Mike worked with Statistics.com staff to craft a custom design of experiments course.

  • To meet the needs of MTI, Statistics.com:
  • Curated a custom curriculum to meet MTI needs.
  • Included additional online materials and exercises.
  • Held staff-only webinars led by our instructors.
  • Provided in-depth with a question and answer period following every webinar.
  • Provided teacher assistants throughout the program to help students with the material and their exercises.

More than 60 MTI staff in business units all around the world, successfully completed the custom design of experiments course created specifically for MTI.

For our contribution to the success of their new training program, Statistics.com was named “Supplier of the Year” for MTI.

Courses in the MTI Program

  • Statistics 1 – Probability and Study Design

  • Statistics 2 – Inference and Association

  • Introduction to Design of Experiments

What MTI Students Say

[Understanding the design of experiments]… will help me to save a considerable amount of time to design and analyze the results of experiments. Matching the right experimental method to the problem should increase accuracy while reducing the number of required experimental runs.

[Design of experiments]… will help in designing and analyzing studies. Also having a big team trained at the same time will help to adopt the “same language” in DOE within the team.

Lotta Hirvikoski
Minerals Technology Inc.

I have used DOE in my work for many years. Although this course was designed for beginners, it will enable me to increase my use of DOE and have a better understanding of how it works and how to use it to the best advantage.
