How WVU Medicine Grapples With Opportunities Posed By Big Data

WVU Medicine (MVUM) is a not-for-profit corporation and healthcare provider in West Virginia. As a part of the The WVU Health System, it is the state’s largest health system with nine hospitals, and is the largest private employer.

The Need

Like most large healthcare providers, MVU Medicine was grappling with the challenges and opportunities posed by big data.

The migration of patient data to accessible electronic formats at healthcare organizations has given MVUM the raw material to improve patient outcomes and business processes.  To make effective use of the data, however, MVUM and their provider networks needed to have statistics and analytics expertise.

Our Solution

WVUM approached Statistics.com to provide an intensive analytics education to key members of their business optimization and business intelligence teams. These analysts needed to learn how to properly analyze data and present recommendations to senior management.

  • To accomplish this goal, Statistics.com:
  • Assembled a custom curriculum to train MVUM staff.
  • Provided teacher assistants throughout the program to help students with the material and their exercises.
  • Statistics.com trained select MVUM staff on:
  • Visualization techniques to analyze data.
  • Use statistical and machine learning models for prediction.
  • Employ forecasting methods for time-series data.
  • Conduct simulation models for queuing and risk.

What WVU Medicine Students Say

As a Business Intelligence Developer for WMV Medicine, these courses helped me to brush up on the skills needed to prepare me for Biostatistics for Medical Sciences.

Brittany Brooks
WVU Medicine

The healthcare industry is extremely data-rich due to electronic medical records which allow for the opportunity to find insight into large data sets. Brushing up on my stats knowledge as well as diving into predictive modeling will allow me to turn data into meaningful insights that our health system can use to improve business processes.
