This course builds on previous knowledge of Rasch theory and the Winsteps software program. It focuses on teaching students to not only analyze data, but present it in a clear and powerful way. Students will learn how to screen data and make judicious data selection and editing decisions. Previous experience using Winsteps and Excel is recommended.
Rasch Measurement – Further Topics
This course will teach you how to Rasch theory and its application in the Winsteps software begun in Practical Rasch Measurement-Core Topics. The visual step-by-step tutorial propels you along the road to success. This course introduces exciting new topics and delves into earlier topics more deeply.

At the conclusion of this course students will be able to import data from SPSS, SAS, Stata and Excel, install and operate Winsteps software, and analyze dichotomous and polytomous data. They will investigate text functioning and test equating with a goal of successfully analyzing data and communicating their findings to decision makers.
- Deal with missing data
- Calculate orrelations and local fit-statistics
- Estimate polytomous models
- Deal with differential item functioning
- Perform test equating

Organization of Course
This course takes place online at The Institute for 4 weeks. During each course week, you participate at times of your own choosing – there are no set times when you must be online. Course participants will be given access to a private discussion board. In class discussions led by the instructor, you can post questions, seek clarification, and interact with your fellow students and the instructor.
At the beginning of each week, you receive the relevant material, in addition to answers to exercises from the previous session. During the week, you are expected to go over the course materials, work through exercises, and submit answers. Discussion among participants is encouraged. The instructor will provide answers and comments, and at the end of the week, you will receive individual feedback on your homework answers.
Homework in this course consists of short answer questions to test concepts.
In addition to assigned readings, this course also has supplemental readings available online, and an end of course data modeling project.
All necessary study material is provided online by the instructor. Helpful additional study material can be found in the book Introduction to Rasch Measurement (Smith & Smith, Eds., 2004, JAM Press). The text can be ordered directly from the publisher, JAM Press.
Please order a copy of your course textbook prior to course start date.
The course will use a time-limited version of Winsteps software available when the course starts. Microsoft Excel is used extensively. Note: Winsteps does not run on native Macintosh OS; you will need to be running Windows.
